Who Am I?

4 min read
It's been over three years since I've joined DA. I joined because it was around that time when I started to seriously consider my art and began to work harder at it. I realize even though I've submitted a lot of pieces since, I haven't really talked about myself. I didn't for several reasons: because I was quite young, I was terrified of internet stalkers, and I just didn't really see the point. No one had particularly cared about who I was before, since all I really wanted to do was share my art and possibly make some artist friends, and it took a long while to get that started...

I still don't have that many followers, but hey, I made a couple of really nice friends! I also let myself out of my shell a little and tried to talk to people more, instead of hoping that someone would talk to me. I've become a little more confident, and I thought why not try and properly form friendships. By that I mean, to really be my friend, you'd want to know more about me, right? Instead of that one girl on the internet who draws sometimes.

So here goes!

My name is Christine (you probable already knew that, with my signatures and my deviantID, please call me Christine or Chris or whatever. It's weird if you call me amiriteC, it was a username I came up with somehow when I was like 10.

I am a Korean-Canadian teenager who was born and raised in Ontario. I'm sixteen years old. My age is a reason why I was so cautious of speaking to others, and it's perhaps the first time I've publicly disclosed my age on a non-personal social network.

I have an older brother who is not an artist but is a huge influence so I'll be mentioning him a lot probably. I also have a dog named Misty (yes, after the pokemon character!), I just thought I'd mention her just because.

I'm really into Korean culture as it is my culture (heh) and yeah that does mean I listen to kpop and watch korean dramas, but I don't think I'll bring that here. I don't really draw bands or real people, so don't expect any fanart of that.

I'm really short, only 5'1" (~155cm). It's sort of funny, since I'm friends with a lot of tall people.

I'm both an artist and a writer, but do none of these things professionally because I am a child. I don't think I'll post much of my personal writing because I am extremely shy with that. Writing is something I do more for myself nowadays, and I don't think I'm ready to show it to the public eye (even if that public is a rather small public).

I'm wayy too paranoid about all this, oh my god. I was that easily impressionable kid in school that was sure that if I ever told people on the internet my given name, they'd find me and break into my home in the middle of the night and kill me. The fear-tactic worked too easily on me.

But so yeah!
Me by amiriteC
This is me! I just finished dyeing the roots of my hair in this photo so I took a lot of selfies, hahaha. I won't upload that many pictures of myself here, heh, sorry. I have an instagram that I'm not as worried about though! My instagram username is christine.se.kim, and feel free to follow! I post some art stuff there, it's a mix of a personal and art instagram.
I also have a twitter but you don't want to follow that........... my username is christinesekim. I swear a bit a lot there and it's filled with rants and dumb jokes so you may not like that as much, haha...
Mistyyyy by amiriteC
This is my dog. I love her so much. I just wanted to include a picture of her because she's really cute.

Okay, I'll just finish up here I guess.
I don't really know why I wrote this in the end, I just thought I could make this more personable.
I guess just to sum up

Here's to a new year, and many more to come!

I had quite a long absence from deviantART that I had tried to break free of but I realize I'm doing a horrible job. I thought the best way of welcoming myself back was to explain my activities during my mini hiatus. My high school recently put on a stage production of The Addams Family: The Musical and I was a part of it. I was part of our pit band... or our zombie pit band, to relate to the Addams Family in whole. We called ourselves the The Ungrateful Dead Zombie Pit Band and I played the trombone. We even played the part as zombies, dressed up, got makeup done, and even terrorized the audience by walking around for a bit. It was so much fun.
We had been working since September and put on our show at the end of April, and it was the most work and stress that I have ever experienced so far in my short life. I was absolutely exhausted. So for the month of March and April I was working my ass off in the production. It was so hard but it was so much fun.
What's even greater, we were nominated in 15 different categories in our city-wide high school stage production awards, which is more than any other school received. We are so thrilled especially with all the stress, work and tears. Even our pit band was nominated! We were so worried because we had only gotten our scores in January so we missed a whole three months of potential practicing, but it all paid off.
The whole thing felt and still feels surreal. I can't believe its over. I remember specifically how there were times where we'd just break down and cry because of the stress and panic. I've had a couple as well, and there was this one period of time where I just thought "I just want to quit, this is too much. I want a normal high school career, this is too much stress for me to handle." I didn't, obviously, as I felt that I owed it to the band to continue playing. Luckily this phase ended quickly and I was back to hard work and it became fun again.
I am very excited for the awards ceremony and to upload some more art, now that I can pick up my pencils and my tablet pen once again.

And guys, The Addams Family: The Musical is the most hilarious musical you will ever watch, I suggest grabbing the chance to watch it, but I don't think it'll compare to my high school's production (haha, semi-joking)

Hope everyone is well :)

I'll talk a little first.

  • What is pen sensitivty? Well basically,
    9 by amiriteC
It allows you to vary the width of your pen strokes with how much pressure you apply to it, and almost essential to digital art.
You can notice tapered ends to the strokes with pen pressure but the same width in the strokes without.

  • Please don't forget to install/update your driver! It is NOT optional! Please install it. You should be able to find your drivers online easily by doing a simple google search of your tablet model + "driver". (ALSO NOTE: Yes, you NEED to have a pen tablet in order to use pen pressure. It is 100% necessary!!! The brand does not matter, but the most popular is Wacom. You can find super cheap small second hand tablets on ebay if you want to start out small, and if you draw a lot, it is definitely worth the investment.)

Common tablet brands and the link to their list of drivers:
    - Wacom drivers: link
    - Genius drivers: link
    - Huion drivers: link

  • If you have a pen that came with your tablet computer I can not help you. I have no idea how those work or what the drivers are for that. Please look up a separate tutorial for those.

  • For reference a lot of the time I'll refer to using Wacom tablets, but unless I specify that the solution is Wacom specific, it shouldn't matter what brand of tablet you have.

Before we get into the actual solutions I've discovered...

Remember to do the BASIC UNIVERSAL fixes first! By that, I mean...
    - Restart your computer (PLEASE DO THIS. It fixes like 94% of all problems)
    - Close and re-open SAI
    - Re-install SAI
    - Install and re-install your driver
    - Make sure you HAVE a driver installed
    - Unplug and plug your tablet back in

If these DO NOT WORK, then please, carry on.

1. Your Brush Settings in SAI

Sometimes something has happened and boom, your pen sensitivity doesn't work and your driver is working completely fine. Take a look at your brush settings. These things right here:
1 by amiriteC
Now specifically, look at the part that says Min Size. That bar shouldn't be at 100%. 0% will give you absolute pen pressure, but some artists like to move that level around a bit. But basically, if you're looking for pen pressure, and are not getting it, take a look and make sure the Min Size bar is NOT at 100%.
Personally I've never had this problem, as my settings don't often change on their own unless I mess around a bit too much with my SAI files in its folder, but who knows, apparently this has solved a few people's issues.

2. Your "Click Detection Pressure" Settings in SAI

This seems to be the most common issue with pen pressure in SAI. Open up SAI and in the menu bar at the top go to Other (O) > Options (O)...
 2 by amiriteC
This window should pop up:
3 by amiriteC
Now click on Digitizer Support
4 by amiriteC5 by amiriteC

There your Click Detection Pressure bar setting should be at 0 to receive absolute pen pressure. If it's already at 0, set it to 100, then click okay. Then go back, set it back to 0, and now try pen pressure. It should be working. You can also try closing and reopening the program before resetting it back to 0.
This also was never a problem of mine, but apparently it was for a lot of other people, so it's a good idea to put it here I guess. There are other deviantART tutorials talking about this so I think I'll end it here.

3. Tablet Drivers and Tablet Hardware

Talked about this a little in the beginning, but make sure your tablet driver is up to date and functioning properly. Also make sure the driver is actually installed. Drivers are not an optional part of the tablet if you want it to function properly. The drivers are free to download on their website (remember, I've linked it above) so there's not much reason not to have one. It's possible that your driver has for some reason uninstalled itself (computers are witches sometimes) so double check to make sure its there!

Usually when SAI pen sensitivity isn't working I'll try it out in other programs to make sure that it's fine. Sometimes re-installing the entire driver helps as well. Also try out your tablet on other computers to see if the tablet lies in itself. Make sure the nib isn't worn out and if it is replace it. Make sure that the actual tablet isn't broken as well, if it is you might need to get it fixed or have to replace it... blah blah blah, I can't really say much more but you can Google tutorials or help and/or ask a friend.

Oh and don't forget to try to unplug the tablet and then plug it back in! Sometimes just a manual restart is what it takes to keep it going, including closing and reopening SAI.

4. Wacom Tablet Preferences

This has almost ALWAYS been my issue. It is ridiculous.
NOTE: This is a WACOM tablet SPECIFIC method!! I have no idea what other tablets are like and so do NOT know the solutions to those. I'm so sorry.
It has caused pen sensitivity to not work ONLY IN SAI as well, pen sensitivity not to work in general, and more the entire tablet just to screw around as well. I shall explain.

  • Go to Control Panel > View Devices and Printers.
  • Now find your tablet and right click on it. You should see a drop-down list and at the top there should be Wacom Tablet Properties and below it Wacom Tablet Preference File Utility. These two are important.
6 by amiriteC

You've probably already seen the Wacom Tablet Properties window, as you've probably used it to decide some settings for yourself.
7 by amiriteC

You wanna know something? These exact settings sometimes screw you up and make it so your pen pressure doesn't work at all. I don't know why, I don't know how, but they do and its god annoying. Like FIX IT WACOM, WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO US. But there's a way to fix that.
  • Go to Wacom Tablet Preference File Utility
8 by amiriteC
  • This above window should pop up. Under All User Preferences click Remove
Your pen sensitivity should work again! It always has for me. But problem, all your preferences are gone! In other words, that means all the changes you made in the Wacom Tablet Properties are gone. This especially sucks for some people with very specific settings, such as myself, where I use dual monitors but only want my tablet to work in a single monitor. I have good news and bad news.
Good news, even though you had to remove your preferences, you can put them back. You can go back to Wacom Tablet Properties and set all your changes back manually and your pen sensitivity should be fine for a while.
Bad news, pen sensitivity after a while might drop again, and you'll have to remove your settings once again. This gets tedious and annoying especially for those who make a lot of changes. But I have another solution.
  1. Notice how in the Wacom Tablet Preference File Utility, under My Preferences, there is a option that says "Backup..."? Use that once you have removed and then put back all your preferences in the. Wacom Tablet Properties window! It will back up all your preferences in one small file.
  2. Save that file somewhere on your computer (somewhere where you'll remember it).
  3. When you're forced to remove your preferences once again, go back to the Wacom Tablet Preference File Utility window, click restore, and then locate and double-click on the back up file. All your settings will be restored AND pen sensitivity will continue to work.

This is a bit annoying but I found it's very fast and efficient compared to the alternate. Also bear in mind, sometimes your back up won't work. It sucks a lot, but when I upgraded and changed my small tablet to my medium, SAI didn't work my pen pressure and my back up didn't help it. I removed my settings and restored them, but the backup kept leading the pen pressure to stop working in SAI, so I was forced to redo them manually and back up once again.
This was only once and that's when I changed tablets though, so I don't know if it's a recurring problem or not, but I'm personally not too worried.
This method has always solved my personal pen pressure settings. Nothing else has fixed my problem like this has.

5. Plug and Unplug with you canvas open

This method hasn't personally worked for me , but it has for Didule (thank you!)
Unplug you tablet, open SAI, then open a new canvas (or the canvas/drawing you're currently working on), then plug your tablet back in.
Hasn't worked for me, but it worked for someone!

6. Your "Misc" settings in SAI

This method has actually worked for me (No.4 was my holy grail go to, but this worked for me yay!) and RonTheWolfwas kind enough to share it with me! (Thank you!)
So first, find your source folder for SAI (when you downloaded SAI, you had a folder, right? Go find it and open it!)
Now, find a file that says misc. (you're going to have to do open that file and do some changes, so if messing with things makes you nervous, feel free to make a copy of it before any changes were made and put it somewhere safe)

Immediately upon opening it, it should look something like this:

Now near the very bottom it says "TabletMouseSimulation = 1"
And it SHOULD say that! If it says 0, then change it to 1 !

7. Previous Drivers that were Uninstalled, but not Eradicated from your Computer

(Thanks so much kartos!!)
This isn't a problem I ran into, but for a specific reason, and I'll explain why at the end.

So basically (this applies to nearly all programs btw) even when you uninstall something, it can leave behind pesky files that are hidden beneath layer and layer of folders. Most of the time, these files don't cause many issues, but sometimes, they do. This can happen when you uninstall a wacom driver, and wow it's annoying.

So to get rid of these files...
1. Uninstall your current Wacom driver (a reboot isn't all that necessary, but do it if you need to).
2. Make sure SAI and other drawing programs are closed.
3. Open up your C:Drive
4. Open up Program Files, and find any folders that say "Wacom" or "Tablet" (but if you have a tablet computer, make sure these folders are not related to that!!) and delete all of it!
5. Reinstall your wacom driver
6. Reboot entire computer
7. Open SAI and test if your pen pressure works!

The reason why I've never dealt with this is because I use an un-installation program called "REVO Uninstaller" and I have the option to do a deep thorough cleaning of all related files when I uninstall something, so I don't have residual files. This is handy when you accidentally install a program that brings all sorts of shit into your computer (toolbars, popups, changing your search engine to bing or whatever) and it just removes everything related. It's great! But I understand people don't want to install a program to uninstall things, so just do the above clean now and then, and you'll be fine!

8. Restarting Wacom Professional Services

This method was provided by Yumiandava (Thank you so much!!)
1. Click on Start (or press the windows key on your keyboard)
2. Search for "Services" and then click on it (it should just say Services). A window should pop up with a list of services.
3. Scroll through the list until your find one that says "Wacom Professional Services"
4. Click on it, and then to the left, there should be two options to either STOP or RESTART the service. You can click either other, but if you stop the service, make sure to remember to start it up again!

And that should do it!

9. Maybe Paint Tool SAI just doesn't like you

Okay, no, but seriously, if you have a pirated/unpaid for copy of SAI, it's possible that karma is biting you back in the butt, illegal versions of programs never guarantee proper function and won't always properly work. It is always best to actually buy a copy so that if something doesn't work, you can go to their official website to report issues and/or ask for their help at their Information Desk. So perhaps its a good idea to go to their site and buy their Software License.

~*~

If you're still experiencing issues then my greatest apologies :( Maybe youtube will be able to help you or another user. Unfortunately due to my decreased amount of time since starting university I won't be responding to comments anymore. I'm really sorry about that. If I see/find a new solution then I'll try and add it, and if you'd like to add one, feel free to PM me. It may take a while, but I'll probably get around to it.

Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I really do wish everyone the best of luck, and I hope that all your pen pressure issues are solved. Good luck, and happy drawing!

Features!

5 min read
Read the rules and get featured if you wish :)
Since I strongly doubt many people will see this journal I will be featuring some other people as well (without them commenting), just some friends and all, oh but that won't really take up space. If I exceed 10 people then so be it, it's not like someone's going to smite me or anything (but if I do exceed it'll still only be 10 people who comment who get featured, like if I choose five people to feature on my own, then there will be a total of 15 people)

:bulletyellow: Rules! :bulletyellow:
1. For each of the 10 first people commenting this journal, I will put their avatar and the 3 deviations I like most from their gallery on the list! (you can also suggest 3 if you wish)

2. If you comment, you have to do the same in your journal, putting the tagger on the first place. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone! (If you do not follow this rule, I won't feature you)

Dominic Hill

Born January 7th, 1990 (Age 24) - Vocalist, Guitarist
Dominic Hill is the oldest and considered the leader of the band, Tuesday Park. He is seen as the main male vocalist of the band as well as the guitarist. As a child, Dominic had been interested in theater, but expressed that after listening to The Beatles’ music, became inspired and more inclined to follow a musical route. He took vocal training and learned to play guitar and soon became very passionate in singing acoustic covers with his guitar. During high school, he and one of his classmates—Aaron, bassist of Tuesday Park—became friends because of their shared interest in music and decided to form a musical group together. Together they recruited the remaining three members of the band, through internet forums, bulletin board notices and mutual acquaintances. The other band members have described Dominic to be both a mother, father and older brother figure to the rest of the group. They have described him to be a natural leader to them all, he being the leader not only because the band was his original idea, but for the responsibility he willingly holds for the band. His favourite bands are the Arctic Monkeys and The 1975, and his favourite songs are “You” and “Girls” by The 1975.

Aaron Lewis

Born July 29th, 1990 (Age 24) - Bassist
Aaron Lewis is the bassist of the band Tuesday Park. His band members have identified him as the most ‘musical’ of the group, as he has extensive knowledge and practice in many areas of music. Aaron has studied music ever since youth, his first instrument having ever learned being the guitar at age five, but gradually moving onto the bass into his younger teenage years. Aaron can play five different instruments aside from the guitar and bass, all having learned either on his own time or will, these instruments being trumpet, piano, violin, saxophone and cello. He has been noted by his fellow band mates that he can indeed sing, but is not the one of the band’s main vocals because he recognizes Dominic’s and Iris’s abilities much more. He has also written a large majority of Tuesday Park’s songs and has been highly appraised for his heart-moving lyrics and creative melodies. Aaron, alone, has won and been nominated for several awards based on his songwriting (see awards). He says that there is no type of music he has any dislike towards, and how he doesn't exactly have a favourite genre, but says he has an abundant amount of appreciation towards Broadway music.  His favorite songs are "When I Was A Man" by Bruno Mars, "One Song Glory" from the Broadway musical RENT and "She's Always a Woman" by Billy Joel.

Iris Taylor

Born April 17th, 1991 (Age 23) - Main Vocalist
Iris Taylor (born Iris Oh) is the main vocalist of the band Tuesday Park. Ever since youth, Iris has been described to be an avid and promising singer. Iris has been noted to have participated in many of her school’s musical productions and has been the lead in the majority of them. Born in Korea, Iris originally had the intent of making her debut in Asia, but says that the competitive and ‘possessive’ music industry greatly frightened her, and she had also failed many auditions before. When she was fourteen, her family immigrated to Canada and Iris decided to try and pursue a musical career there instead, and eventually met up with the other members of Tuesday Park. Iris is fluent in English and Korean, and has sung and released many songs in both languages. Iris has received great recognition for her singing ability among many other professionals. She has been described as being able to portray and express a great amount of emotion through her singing. Her bandmates have described her voice as truly remarkable and have each recognized Iris’s great talent and skill. Iris states that she enjoys both Korean and English music, and states that she is a fan of Taeyeon from Girls’ Generation and Adele. Her favourite songs are “If” by Taeyeon and “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan. Her and Emily are planning to release a clothing line together, but details and further info are to be announced.

Matthew Davis

Born November 2nd, 1992 (Age 22) - Drummer
Matthew Davis is the drummer of Tuesday Park. Matthew showed immediate interest in the drums in youth, and had taken lessons since the age of six. His percussion skills have been highly commended by teachers, peers and professionals alike. Matthew studied different forms and genres of percussion his entire life and was part of several different bands. He became part of his middle and high school’s concert, orchestral and jazz bands, and had joined a classmate’s rock band, Big Runner, for a temporary period of time. Big Runner entered a couple of competitions, but while the band never got far into the competition, Matthew was always commended for his playing and many judges stepped forward to give him advice and opportunities for his future. Matthew, too intimidated and young at the time, politely declined, but continued to pursue his drumming career on his own before formally becoming a member of Tuesday Park. Matthew has been described to be an easy-going, happy and relaxed guy for everything except for his drumming, which he takes exceptionally seriously. He described Buddy Rich to be his greatest inspiration and role model in drumming. He says one of his favourite song to play on his drums, he says is, “Whiplash” which was composed by Hank Levy. Matthew is known in the band to have more unconventional, undiscovered  and ‘underground’ music tastes. He says he likes music that he feels are more ‘authentic’ and shows expression of the band or performer. He says that one of his favourite bands is Neutral Milk Hotel, because he says that their unconventional sounds all together create something very ‘raw’. He says some of his favourite songs are “Any Color You Like” by Pink Floyd, “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen, and “For No One” by the Beatles. People often say that his personality doesn’t seem to match his music tastes, nor do the music itself really have much in common.

Emily “Em” Thomas

Born February 29th, 1991 (Age 21) - Keyboardist
Emily Thomas, commonly referred to as ‘Em’ by band members and fans, is the youngest and the keyboardist of the band. Emily took up the piano at a young age due to her mother’s insistence, and by the age of fourteen became a very capable and skilled classical piano player. But at this age, Emily expressed her boredom and disinterest in classical music, and so changed music teachers to try and learn other genres, and has proven capable. Today, Emily explains how she has regained her appreciation for classical music, and described her past disinterest as "teenage idiocy". Emily is shown to be extremely dexterous and quick with her fingers, which is either because or why she has become a skilled pianist. Because she is the youngest, the others have nicknamed her the 'baby' of the group. Apart from her activities with the band, she also works as a model for several fashion magazines and is also one of the hosts for the radio show A Song from Us. Emily has also been noted to be pursuing a career in acting, already having appeared in music videos of other artists. She was spotted to be filming  in her fellow band mate’s, Iris’s, upcoming music video for her single “But Only If”. Emily is known to be a big fan of movies, and states their soundtracks to be a great factor in that. She states that some of her favourites soundtracks are from the movies The Breakfast Club, Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Prince of Egypt. Her favourite musical artist is Owl City and states that Adam Young has inspired her to pick up the keyboard and electronic type music. She states that he was the reason why she wanted to learn other genres of music on the keyboard. Her and Iris plan to release a clothing line together but details and further info are to be announced.
